Education in the United Arab Emirates was something that was never important until it shortly began after the establishment of the federation. The beginning of a first university in Al Ain, Abu Dhabi, the United Arab Emirates University was also created around the same time of the federation. Since this time the country has made huge strides and efforts in ensuring that the literacy rates, education plan, and programs would be more efficient for the future, and equal to men and women. The UAE today currently spends 25 percent of total federal government spending on education.
The United Arab Emirates has one of the lowest student-to-teacher ratios in the world. Education is mandatory through the ninth grade but the requirement is unfortunately not enforced. The UAE’s highest priorities are now education. As President High Highness Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan, founder of the UAE noted, “The greatest use that can be made of wealth is to invest it in creating generations of education and trained people.” (Embassy of the United Arab 1) The United Arab Emirates has greatly enforced education on men and women since 1975, which at that time the rate of adult literacy was 54 percent, and now today the literacy rates for both genders are nearly 90 percent.
With the steps of reforming their education in the UAE they started with focusing on an area they thought was imperative. They wanted to transform K to 12 programs to ensure that students are fully prepared to attend universities around the world. Education reforms focuses on better preparation, greater accountability, higher standards and improved professionalism. In addition they plan to change from lecture-structure instruction and replacing it with more interactive forms of learning, and an English-language education, which is being integrated into other subjects such as math, and science. “The Abu Dhabi Education Council (ADEC), the Dubai Education Council (DEC) and the UAE Ministry of Education are each tasked with education reform, while preserving local traditions, principles and the cultural identity of the UAE.” (Embassy of the United Arab 1)
The UAE is also the home to a wide variety and ranges of universities both public and private. The UAE citizens can attend government institutions free of charge and the UAE has one of the highest application participation rates around the world. Some huge universities in the UAE are the UAE University, Zayed University, and many higher colleges of technology. “Ninety-five percent of all girls and 80 percent of boys enrolled in the final year of secondary school apply for admission to a higher education institution.” (Embassy of the United Arab 1)
The United Arab Emirates also consist of many private institutions, and Global Partnerships. A number of international universities have campuses or programs in the UAE. These are multi-university complexes that attract students from the region who are unable to go abroad to study. The government of the UAE also recognizes the need to support students with special needs. The UAE signed the optional protocol to the UN convention that guarantees rights for people with special needs. The UAE also participates in the Special Olympics, and vocation and rehabilitation centers have been developed throughout the country.
Throughout my research I can see how much education has become an importance in the UAE. Every day they are trying to better their education and improve their system. They find the need for education and the preparation for college greatly significant in both men and women.

- What will be produced with your country's resources? - The UAE’s main export commodities are crude oil, natural gas, re-exports, dried fish and dates. Its main import commodities are machinery and transport equipment, chemicals and food.
- How will these goods be produced? The production side of the UAE is based heavily on expatriate labor. Which is a production theory framework that may be utilized to understand the economic impact of expatriate labor on the economy. The UAE combines the traditional factors of production, technology and organization to produce collective output.
- Who will use these goods? These goods will be used for gas, food, and other needs of oil. Whoever chooses to use them would be those of the countries it is being exported too.
- Will these goods be exported? Yes these good are exported to Japan, India, Iran, South Korea, and Thailand which are the top 5 export partners to the UAE.
What is the country that you are researching: United Arab Emirates
Write a brief summary of the economic system of the country: Identify and explain the type of economic system.
- The UAE is a free-market economy, which means it is a market-based economy where prices for goods and services are set freely by the forces of supply and demand and are allowed to reach their point of balance without intervention by government policy. The UAE is also one of most politically stable and secure in the region, and is very steady despite a short-lived hiatus as the global economy faltered. Recovery occurred with the help from high oil prices, increases government spending and a revival in tourism. With the bad news of the falling economy and the dip in 2011, shortly after that the UAE GDP rose to reach US419 billion at the end of 2014. The IMF is only predicting great things over the next 7 years, as the GDP will continue to grow at a rate of 4 to 5 per cent over the next seven years.
Select three key economic indicators such as poverty rates, labor distribution, use of resources, etc. and analyze what this information says about the country, how does it compare to other countries, change over time, etc.
- One of the main causes of poverty rates in the UAE is due to image. This statement alone says a lot about the country as they focus much on the image that everyone else sees. For an example, most individuals in an Emirati family own their own cars. Mostly they buy high-end cars and don't mind applying for a loan to own it. One of the articles I read talked about how poverty would not be in higher numbers if people did not try to live luxurious lives. In relation to other countries, here in the United States as I'm sure some people like to live in am image to much of the "American Dream" is having a nice car, a nice house, a beautiful family but working towards all of that and doing what you love. With the UAE's use of resources I would have to compare it to much alike of other countries. The UAE booms in resources and some of their resources sell for billions and go to the highest bidder in the United Arab Emirates. I think having great resources shows a powerful country and a well brought up one. Their resources support them and allow them to stay a float. Lastly, labor distribution was something that really stood out to me. In the UAE they labor of their resources is taken very seriously. Which I would like to think is the same as other countries. I think the UAE's labor distribution puts many other citizens in the work force, so it allows them to have a job. But from some research it seems as they do not have to be very qualified for the job. So again in comparison to the United States a lot of the jobs we try to obtain are based on the education we receive.

Oil Production vs. Consumption.
1. Record:
Oil Production: 3.213 million bbl/day (2012 est.)
Oil Consumption: 669.00
2. Summarize: Write a short paragraph explaining the information you discovered and conclusions you can draw. How does this information help you develop a sense of place for the country -- living conditions, social development, use of land or other resources, etc.?
The United Arab Emirates is on of the 10 larges oil and natrual gas producers in the world. The UAE is also a major oil producer and exporter, and has relied on its large oil and natural gas resources to support its economy. For example, the hydrocarbon economy accounts for approximately 80% of government revenues and more than half of the country's goods exports. As the UAE is trying to grow every day they use enhanved oil recovery techniques to increars the extraction rates of the country's mature oil fields. The UAE is making notable progress in diversifying its economy through tourism, trade, and manufacturing. However, in the near term, oil, natural gas, and associated industries will continue to account for the majority of economic activity in the seven emirates.
3. Contemplate:
What questions does the information raise in your mind. Write down two questions you have based on what you have discovered.
If the UAE has so much oil and is constantly producing and exporting so much, why and where are we consuming from?
What were to happen if one day the UAE just ran out of oil and could not export it?
